Planning a ski trip to the Alps: Which resort should we choose for intermediate skiers?

Hey everyone, a group of four intermediate skiers and snowboarders are planning a week-long winter trip to the Alps this coming January. We are looking for a resort that offers a good mix of reliable snow, extensive red runs, and a lively (but not overly wild) après-ski scene. Budget is moderate, and we would ideally prefer somewhere relatively easy to get to from a major airport like Geneva or Zurich. Which destinations would you recommend based on your experiences?

Have you considered Les Arcs? It has massive amounts of red runs, great snow reliability in January, and it is relatively easy to get to from Geneva via transfer.

Check out Cervinia. The snow record is fantastic because of the glacier, the red runs on the Italian side are wide and cruising-friendly, and the food is amazing.

If you want convenience from Geneva, take a look at Flaine. It's part of the Grand Massif, very snow-sure, and packed with brilliant long reds for intermediates.

Saas-Fee in Switzerland is another incredible option. It’s high, snow-reliable, and has a great village vibe with moderate après-ski that isn't completely wild.

I'd recommend Livigno. It's a bit further to transfer, but the duty-free status keeps your moderate budget intact, and the intermediate terrain is top-tier.

Mayrhofen in Austria is great too, though Zillertal is a bit past Innsbruck. For Geneva or Zurich arrivals, staying closer to the French or Swiss Alps usually works better.

La Plagne is arguably the ultimate intermediate paradise. Endless blue and red runs, high altitude for snow in January, and easy transfers from Geneva airport.

Val d'Isère is fantastic, though it might push the upper limit of a moderate budget. Tignes is usually slightly cheaper and shares the same massive ski area.

Don't overlook Engelberg in Switzerland. It's a super quick train ride from Zurich, making travel a breeze, and the red runs are gorgeous.

Morzine is wonderful if you want a traditional alpine village feel with great access to the Portes du Soleil. January snow is usually solid up high.

St. Anton is world-famous, but for intermediates, it can be quite steep and the après is definitely wild rather than moderate. Stick to places like Les Arcs or La Plagne instead.

Adelboden in Switzerland is a hidden gem for intermediates with stunning views and very manageable travel times from Zurich or Geneva.
