Best places in Europe to escape the intense summer heat

With European summers getting increasingly scorching, my partner and I are looking to plan a trip for July to somewhere mild and refreshing. We want to avoid the massive heatwaves of the Mediterranean and instead find destinations with cooler breezes, alpine air, or coastal fog. Does anyone have recommendations for cities or regions in Europe where the summer weather stays comfortably below 25°C?

Head straight to Norway! Bergen and the fjord region are usually very mild in July. Highs rarely break 20°C and you get that crisp, refreshing mountain air.

Iceland is your best bet. Reykjavik and the Highlands stay cool all summer long, usually hovering around 12 to 15°C. Just pack a windbreaker!

Try the Azores in Portugal. Unlike the mainland which bakes in July, these islands in the middle of the Atlantic stay green, breezy, and comfortably in the low 20s.

Tallinn, Estonia and the Baltic coast are wonderful in July. You get long daylight hours, lovely sea breezes, and temperatures that rarely feel scorching.

Consider the Swiss Alps. Towns like Zermatt or Wengen get plenty of sunshine, but the altitude keeps the daytime temperatures refreshing and the nights wonderfully cool.

The northern coast of Spain, especially Asturias and Cantabria (Green Spain), is much cooler and wetter than the rest of the country. Places like Gijón or Santander are fantastic summer refuges.

Lapland in northern Sweden or Finland is incredible in July. It's mild, uncrowded, and you can experience the midnight sun without melting.

Don't forget about Ireland! The Wild Atlantic Way offers stunning coastal fog, dramatic cliffs, and temperatures that rarely climb past 20°C in peak summer.
