I'm heading to Italy and Spain for two weeks this July and I really want to avoid checked baggage fees and lost luggage. Has anyone successfully managed a European summer trip using just a carry-on suitcase and a personal item? I'd love to know your essential packing lists, favorite travel-friendly clothing brands, and laundry strategies to keep things light.

Yes, it is totally doable! I did three weeks in Italy last summer with just a 40L backpack and a daypack. The key is merino wool clothing because you can wear it multiple times without it holding odors. I swear by packing cubes. They compress everything down and keep your clothes organized. I brought five days' worth of clothes and just did sink wash every few nights using travel detergent sheets. Quick-dry fabrics are an absolute lifesaver in the July heat.

Wear your bulkiest items on the plane—your heaviest sneakers, a light jacket, and jeans. Once you arrive in Italy and Spain, you'll be glad you don't have to lug a giant suitcase over cobblestones and up ancient staircases.

Uniqlo is my holy grail for travel clothes. Their Airism and linen lines are lightweight, breathable, and look put-together. Plus, they roll up into tiny spaces in your carry-on.

Don't overpack shoes! Limit yourself to two pairs: one extremely comfortable pair of walking shoes for exploring Must-see historical landmarks and ancient ruins in Europe?, and one nicer pair of sandals for dinners out. Wear the heavy ones on the flight.

Solid toiletries are your friend. Solid shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bars mean no liquid restrictions and zero risk of explosions in your bag due to cabin pressure.

Stick to a strict color palette—like navy, white, and beige—so every top matches every bottom. That way, you can mix and match to create tons of different outfit combinations without bringing extra items.

When deciding between trains and cheap flights to hop between countries, make sure to factor in baggage fees. You can read more about transit options in this Eurail Pass vs. Budget Airlines: Which is the best way to travel? breakdown.

I always pack a lightweight Turkish towel. It takes up no space, dries instantly, works as a beach towel for the Costa Brava, and can double as a picnic blanket or scarf if churches require covered shoulders.

Bring a designated laundry bag to separate your dirty clothes from clean ones. Laundromats in Italy and Spain are pretty easy to find if you need a proper machine wash halfway through your trip.

Remember that you can buy cheap toiletries like sunscreen and toothpaste at local farmacias when you arrive, so don't waste precious carry-on weight hauling full-sized bottles from home.

The secret is rolling, not folding! Rolling your clothes tightly prevents wrinkles and maximizes every square inch of your suitcase. You'll honestly never want to check a bag again after experiencing how freeing it is.
