Hey everyone! My partner and I are planning a trip to Switzerland this summer and we really want to experience hiking in the Alps. However, we are total beginners when it comes to alpine trekking and aren't in peak mountaineering shape. Could anyone recommend some gentle, scenic trails or beginner-friendly guided tours that don't involve extreme elevation drops? Any tips on gear and the best regions to base ourselves in would also be hugely appreciated!

Welcome to Switzerland! For beginners, I strongly recommend basing yourselves in the Jungfrau region, specifically Wengen or Grindelwald. The trails there are exceptionally well-maintained, and cable cars do most of the heavy lifting. Also, before you go, check out this guide on public transit to figure out the train system, which makes getting to trailheads a breeze.

Check out the Zermatt area! You can take the Gornergrat railway up and do the easy five-lakes walk (5-Seenweg). It offers iconic views of the Matterhorn without requiring intense elevation gains. Just make sure you invest in a good pair of broken-in hiking boots and trekking poles to save your knees on the descents.

If you are wondering whether to book a professional excursion, this article on guided group tours really helped me decide when I first started hiking in the Alps. Having a guide takes all the stress out of navigation, especially for novices.

Try the region around Lake Lucerne. Mount Rigi is known as the 'Queen of the Mountains' and features panoramic, gentle walking paths rather than grueling climbing routes. It is super accessible and perfect for building your alpine confidence.

Don't skip out on the Appenzell region! The hike from Ebenalp down to Seealpsee is stunning, and there are mountain huts along the way where you can grab lunch. Just remember to pack layers because mountain weather can change in an instant, even in summer.

For gear, definitely get a lightweight waterproof jacket and a comfortable daypack. You won't need heavy mountaineering equipment for the beginner trails, but proper footwear is non-negotiable. Have an amazing time planning your trip!

Lauterbrunnen is another fantastic base. You can walk along the valley floor past gorgeous waterfalls with virtually no steep elevation changes, then take the cable car up to Murren for stunning cliffside strolls.

Make sure you download the Swiss Travel Guide app before you arrive. It has real-time trail statuses and weather updates, which is essential for safety when hiking at altitude as a beginner.

If you want a mix of culture and easy walking, staying around Montreux by Lake Geneva lets you explore the terraced vineyards of Lavaux. They are gentle slopes with incredible lake views, perfect for a relaxing alpine vacation.
