I'm planning my first solo backpacking trip across Europe this summer and I'm a bit nervous about feeling lonely. I want to step out of my comfort zone, but I'm naturally a bit introverted. What are the best ways to naturally meet fellow travelers and locals without feeling awkward?

As a fellow introvert, I completely understand the nervousness! Staying in social hostels with common areas made a huge difference for me. Free walking tours are absolute gold for meeting people. You just show up, walk around for two hours, and usually, the guide takes everyone for a drink afterwards. It takes all the pressure off because the conversation flows naturally.

Book a cooking class or a food tour! It is impossible not to bond with people when you are trying to roll pasta or taste local delicacies together. If you are heading south, take a look at these Best culinary tours and traditional food experiences in Italy for some amazing ideas.

Don't be afraid to use apps like Couchsurfing Hangouts or Bumble BFF. I met some incredible hiking buddies in the mountains using local connection tools, and if you are looking for outdoor adventures, you might appreciate these tips on Хайкінг у Швейцарських Альпах.

Pub crawls organized by hostels are a classic way to break the ice. Even if you don't drink alcohol, just going along for the energy and music helps you spot other solo travelers who are looking to chat.

Sit at the bar instead of a private table when eating out alone. It invites quick chats with bartenders or neighbors, and people are much more likely to strike up a casual conversation.

Joining group day trips or excursions is a low-stress option. You get to see the sights, and you're placed right next to travelers with similar interests for the whole day.

Pack a deck of cards! Pulling out a pack of Uno or standard cards in a hostel common room is an instant invitation for people to sit down and join you without needing any small talk to start.

Work exchanges or volunteering through platforms like Worldpackers can also introduce you to deeply welcoming communities of like-minded travelers and locals.

Remember that almost everyone else is in the same boat and secretly hoping someone else will say hello first. Take a deep breath, you're going to have an amazing summer!
