Budget Reality Check: What Did Your 10-Day Europe Trip REALLY Cost?

Hey everyone, I'm planning my first solo trip to Europe next spring and am trying to set a realistic budget for a 10-day adventure. I'm looking at visiting 2-3 cities, perhaps Paris, Rome, and maybe Amsterdam, and flying from the US. I'm not looking for luxury, but also not extreme backpacking – more like comfortable mid-range accommodation, enjoying local food, some museums, and maybe one or two unique experiences. I've seen so many conflicting figures online, so I'd love to hear from people who have actually done a similar trip recently: what was your total expenditure, including flights, accommodation, food, transport, and activities, and what was your biggest unexpected cost?

Hey! I did a very similar trip last May – Paris, Rome, and then flew to Barcelona for a few days. Total cost for 10 days, flying from NYC, was around $3800. This included a $900 round trip flight (booked 4 months in advance), about $120/night for decent Airbnbs, and a good mix of trattorias and cafes. My biggest unexpected cost was definitely spontaneous gelato purchases in Rome – it adds up faster than you think!

Just got back from a 9-day trip hitting Amsterdam and Paris from Chicago. All in, including flights ($1100), mid-range hotels ($140/night average), food, museums, and train between cities, I spent about $4100. The biggest surprise was how much local transport (metro tickets, tram passes) added up in both cities. Definitely look into multi-day passes if you plan on moving around a lot!

I did 10 days in Italy (Rome & Florence) last fall, flying from Dallas. My total came to roughly $3500. Flights were $850, accommodations were around $100/night for boutique hotels, and I cooked some meals to save money. My unexpected cost was the amount I spent on souvenirs and little gifts – I kept seeing unique things and just couldn't resist!

My solo trip to London and Paris for 10 days last spring was about $4200 from the West Coast. Flights were a bit steep at $1200, but I got some lovely 3-star hotels for around $150/night. Food was where I splurged a bit, wanting to try all the local specialties. The biggest unexpected cost? The exchange rate fluctuations, especially with the pound. Keep an eye on that!

I managed to do Paris and Amsterdam for 10 days for about $3200 from Boston. This was by booking flights during an off-peak sale ($750), staying in well-rated guesthouses (~$90/night), and being smart about food (picnics from supermarkets, happy hour deals). My biggest unexpected cost was having to pay for public restrooms in some places, which seems minor but it does add up over time!

I went to Rome, Florence, and Venice for 10 days two years ago, flying from Atlanta. My total was around $3950. Flights were $950, comfortable B&Bs were about $130/night. I did a few guided tours which were pricey but worth it. The biggest unexpected expense was definitely the cost of fast trains between cities – they're convenient but not cheap if you don't book far in advance. If you're wondering about inter-city travel, take a look at this article on Eurail Pass vs. Budget Airlines, it might help!

For 10 days across Paris and Brussels from NYC, I spent about $3700. Flight was $880, accommodation around $110/night for small hotels. I found that drinks (especially wine with dinner or a beer at a cafe) really added up quickly. That was my biggest unexpected cost – I budgeted for food, but not so much for beverages.

My 10-day trip to Berlin and Prague from Miami came in at about $3100. Flights were $700 (got lucky!), and I stayed in very comfortable boutique hostels with private rooms for about $80/night. Food and activities were relatively cheaper in these cities. My biggest unexpected cost was definitely data roaming charges – make sure to get a local SIM card or an eSIM!

I did 10 days in Rome, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast from LA last spring. Total was closer to $4500. Flights were $1300, and accommodation was a bit higher due to the Amalfi Coast (~$180/night average). Food was amazing but also a splurge. Unexpectedly, the cost of ferries and local buses along the coast was more than I anticipated. Beautiful, but pricey!

For a solo 10-day trip to Paris and Barcelona from Chicago, I spent around $3600. Flight was $950, and I booked small, independent hotels for about $100-115/night. I love museums, so those tickets added up, but I pre-booked most to save time. My biggest unexpected cost was impulse shopping – saw some unique boutiques and couldn't resist!

My 10-day adventure through Rome and Amsterdam from Seattle cost me about $4000. Flights were $1050, and I aimed for 3-star hotels which averaged $135/night. I made sure to enjoy a nice dinner every night. The biggest surprise was how quickly small entrance fees to churches or minor attractions accumulated. Every little bit adds up!

A friend of mine just did 10 days in Portugal (Lisbon & Porto) from Denver and spent around $3300. Flights were $800, and accommodation was surprisingly affordable at around $90/night for charming guesthouses. She said her biggest unexpected cost was actually getting around within cities – taxis and ride-shares added up when she was tired of walking. I did Paris and Amsterdam for 10 days, flying from Houston, and my total was around $3900. Flight was $1000, and I opted for clean, central hotels around $130/night. I focused on eating well and doing 2-3 major attractions per city. My biggest unexpected cost was the amount I spent on coffee and pastries – those morning rituals became a daily splurge!
